How to: Use Facebook as a Business - An Introduction

0
0

Nowadays most of us are familiar with using Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family, but it’s a whole different kettle of fish when you pull on your brand mask and use the Pages functionality for business purposes.

Howto_FBBusiness_V1_01.jpg

There are a number of key differences between personal 'Profiles' and 'Pages' on Facebook and it’s important to get to grips with these so you can make the most of this powerful opportunity (avoiding any potentially embarrassing faux-pas while you're at it).

Before you start:

  • You need to have a Facebook Page for your business.
  • Establish a voice for your brand – brands generally use Pages to promote themselves in a less formal way, so have a look at competitors and other brands you like to see how they do it.

Now let’s get started:

Step 1: The first thing to understand is that the world of Facebook is your oyster. With a personal account you can have up to 5,000 friends (congrats if you’re anywhere near that number by the way!) However, with a business Page there is no limit to the number of fans you can acquire.

Howto_FBBusiness_V2_02.jpg

Step 2: After setting up your business page you can, if you want to, create custom tabs using third-party plug-ins or apps such as Woobox (Woobox provides free custom tabs for your Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube accounts).

Howto_FBBusiness_V1_04.jpg

Depending on the type of business you are, you can tailor the experience with a range of functions such as maps, menus, photo galleries or feeds from your blog or Twitter account. You can also create custom tabs within Facebook. To do this, click on the plus sign in the right-hand corner of your chosen tab. A pop-up will appear allowing you to create a ‘Videos’, ‘Events’ or ‘Note’ tab automatically. You will also be given the option to ‘Find more apps’. This will take you through to Facebook’s App Centre, where there are plenty more options to choose from.

Howto_FBBusiness_V1_03.jpg

Step 3: Facebook provides business Pages with a valuable analytics tool called Insights. You can use this to monitor the performance of various aspects of your page, from how each post performed in terms of engagement, to finding out who your fans are. The general gist is to take notice of what people are interacting with and tailor your posts according to which ones are having the best results.

Howto_FBBusiness_V2_05.jpg

Step 4: With a page you can take advantage of the Facebook Offers function allowing you to create deals or offers exclusively for your fans. This is another great way to naturally promote your Page and business, as redemptions of Offers show up in news feeds and help to steer traffic off Facebook and on to your main site. Only available to pages with at least 100 likes.

Howto_FBBusiness_V1_06.jpg

Step 5: If you’re a business with a physical location, be it a permanent shop or a pop-up stall, you can connect your page to that place by adding either an address, location or map. This allows people to check-in when they visit. If you want people to be able to do that, you’ll have to add your business address in your public information settings on your page, which will allow you to create a map on which customers can ‘check in’.

Howto_FBBusiness_V2_07.jpg

Step 6: Owning a business Page means you can take advantage of Facebook Advertising to direct targeted sections of the Facebook world to your page. You can also create sponsored posts to help give your posts more reach. There’s no lower limit to the budgets you can set, so it’s worth running a few campaigns to see who you can attract.

Step 7: While it’s unlikely you’d want to let anyone else loose on your personal Facebook profile, there may be a few people in your business who you’d like to be able to post in an official capacity. You’re able to assign different admin roles to other Facebook users by selecting ‘Admin Roles’ from the ‘Edit Page’ menu. As you wouldn’t want anyone messing with your carefully constructed design, you can also restrict staff to how much control they have over different aspects of the page with five authority levels available.

Howto_FBBusiness_V2_09.jpg

Step 8: Another useful tool that a Page provides is the ability to schedule future posts. This can be very helpful for posting at optimal times for your audience, especially if you’re dealing with different time zones or if you want to announce a new product, but will be too busy promoting it elsewhere to get online. To do this, click in the text box as if you’re about to write a status update, click on the clock symbol in the lower left of the sharing tool, then choose the future year, month, date, hour and minute when you’d like your post to appear.

Howto_FBBusiness_V1_09.jpg

Step 9: In the same way you’re able to head to the Facebook page of a celebrity, company or event and post as yourself, and post comments on their wall, you’re able to do anything on Facebook under the guise of your business. Head to ‘Edit Page’ and choose ‘Use Facebook as X’ which will turn this function on. Anything you do will then map to your page feed, so be careful what you say and what you like – this is the voice of your business that people will see!

Web Copywriting Tips: 10 Things Not To Do

0
0

If you're not an experienced writer, don't fret - with these embarrassing copywriting fails in mind, you can avoid making silly errors, bamboozling visitors and leaving them none the wiser as to what it is that you do.

Copywriting_-_What_not_to_do.jpg

Running your own website can be a daunting prospect, particularly when it comes to knowing what to say without switching people off.

But in many cases, you're in the best position to do things like decide how you want to welcome visitors, write dazzling product descriptions, keep the site fresh with daily updates, and generally put your own stamp on things.

If you're not an experienced writer, there's no need to worry - with these 10 massive fails in mind, you can avoid making silly errors, bamboozling visitors and leaving them none the wiser as to what it is that you do.

1. Don’t make schoolboy errors

Copywriting_fails_1.jpg Source: www.tailsinc.com

Sounds obvious, we know. But they’re distressingly common. A poorly placed comma or apostrophe can totally change your sentence; if you're going to use punctuation, put it in the right places.

One of the all-time classic examples is a cover headline from Tails magazine that appears to say "Rachael Ray finds inspiration in cooking her family and her dog".

Whoopsie! There should, of course, be a comma after 'cooking' - and in truth there was one on the original cover, before the image was doctored and went viral online - but it's still a great example of how a comma can make all the difference.

2. Don't say things that don't make sense

Copywriting_fails_2.jpg Source: xdesktopwallpapers.com

Again, this one sounds like a bit of a given, but even the big guns are guilty of perplexing with lines void of any discernable logic.

Microsoft's 2008 campaign 'Windows. Life Without Walls' was supposed to suggest that the software developer's operating system removes the obstacles from daily life, but it raised a few eyebrows as the more logically minded critics asked: "How can you have windows without walls?"

3. Don't try to be too clever

Copywriting_fails_4.jpg Source: ihuffpost.com

You're trying to establish a brand, so it's understandable that you might want to be clever in your logo or your website copy - but be careful.

For example, London-based coffee brand Apostrophe place an apostrophe over the second 'o' in their name, similar to an accent in Spanish or French, easily creating a recognisable logo.

But the apostrophe in their slogan "Great taste on it's way" is misplaced, and plain wrong grammatically, immediately undermining the integrity of their choice of brand name.

4. Don't limit with your word count

This absolutely does not mean that you shouldn't be concise and have a target word count, but it should be just that - something to aim for, rather than to slavishly stick to.

Treat your word count as a guide, not a limit - write enough to get into the search results, and as much as it takes to cover your point in full.

That being said...

5. Don't overdo it

Copywriting_fails_5.jpg Source: ramblingsandwool.blogspot.co.uk

Remember, your readers probably have less time to spend looking at your page than you have to spend on writing it.

Keep it concise, review what you’ve written and, if you can get your point across in fewer words, you probably should.

Be especially brief in traditionally 'short-form' types of content, such as advertisements online or in print.

6. Don't publish with Lorem Ipsum placeholder text

More than seven million websites indexed by Google contain the phrase "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" which, as we all know, is meaningless placeholder 'Latin' text used to fill empty paragraphs during the design process.

There's not much more that needs to be said, other than to make sure you check each of your pages before publication, and write something to replace any overlooked placeholder text.

7. Don't be lazy with copy and paste

Unique content performs better in search results, so you should always rewrite things like product descriptions. This will also give you the confidence that you won’t fall foul of copyright claims from other publishers.

You might also spot errors or other edits that need to be made - basic mistakes such as copying online text into a print document, complete with the instruction to 'click here for more information'.

Or vice versa - leaving 'turn page' in text you're copying onto your website.

8. Don't treat a line break as a comma

Copywriting_fails_8.jpg Source: pinterest.com

Another example like the Rachael Ray headline before, but this is particularly worth flagging up for menus and price lists, where you should always, always spell out where one item ends and the next begins.

In this example from the Tower of London, for instance, the lack of a comma after 'disabled' in the list of concessions technically means that only 'disabled students' qualify for the discounted entry price.

9. Don't hide valuable keywords in images - they won't be picked up by search engines

For SEO purposes, it’s better to use text if it does the job, rather than any other form of media, including pictures, video, animations and - especially - audio that visitors to your website do not have direct control over.

A website should, of course, look good, have lots of images and engaging content in various forms, but plain text is still the most search-visible, followed by images correctly marked up with alt and title text, and microdata/microformats, if you know what those are!

You can always add both. Take your strapline for example – you can include it in your logo, or in an image on your homepage. But you should also include it somewhere in your copy as it’s more likely to be picked up by search engines. So, if your strapline is 'For the finest cakes and bakes in London' and it's included in an image on your site, you'll need to repeat that strapline in your main text, be it your 'welcome/intro' or 'about' pages.

10. Don't make promises you can't deliver

Copywriting_fails_10.jpg Source: dognpony.wordpress.com

This applies in two senses - first, don't commit to a special offer if it's likely to bankrupt you when 300,000 people try to take advantage of it; the potential online audience is vast, so be careful to place sensible limits on anything you promise in writing.

Secondly, be wary of double meanings in your writing. In this example, "Buy Bed, Free 1 Night Stand", it's likely that the writer knew what they were doing, but it's likely that some would-be customers were either put off by the bedroom humour, or didn't get the joke at all, and totally misunderstood what was on offer.

Perhaps you've spotted them as one of the four real businesses in our TV ad; maybe you've even tasted their gooey (not to mention outrageously delicious) signature dish. Well, we headed to Chimney Cake Bakers to find out more on how a Moonfruit website helped their catering business. Plus, we wanted to eat a lot of cake.

From their North London shop – nestled on a busy high road – Helen, Patrick and their team bake traditional Transylvanian chimney cakes (kürtőskalács)

Their website, an important extension of their physical business, features a brief history of the Hungarian dessert, the culture of the business and (of course) the all important menu.

My KickStart Experience, by Chloe Wright

0
0

Heard about our new KickStart ‘build it for me’ service yet? Fancy giving it a try? Chloe Wright did, and she was so chuffed with her new website that she felt the need to write a little story about her experience, what with her being a writer and all.

KickStart_Chloe_Wright__1_.png

If you don't already know, we've launched a new ‘build it for me’ service called KickStart. In a nutshell, it goes like this: you tell us about your big idea and what you want your site to look like, we get a copywriter and designer from our new KickStart creative team to build it for you, then you take control once it's finished, uploading content and making changes whenever you need to.

Chloe Wright was one of the first to give it a whirl. She was after a website that would provide the foundation for her to showcase her writing skills and experience over time, adding details on each new project as and when it happened. And she was so pleased with the result that she thought she'd do what she does best - write about it...

Over to Chloe:

“Now, I wouldn’t say I’m technologically inarticulate, but I am definitely not skilled enough to build my own website, nor do I have the patience to learn. I wanted a site that I could make changes to whenever I wanted; I could add pictures, edit text and generally allow my space to evolve. I needed someone who could, and Moonfruit offered the ideal service. KickStart.

After communicating with the Moonfruit team and getting all the practicalities out of the way I was asked to brief them on what I wanted from my site. This was where my ideas and specifications came into play. I got to choose my own colours, fonts, what contact information I wanted to supply. I was able to choose what my website was going to be called and provide any art that I wanted it to feature. This was all done from the comfort of my own settee with a cup of tea in hand. What could be better?

Once all my preferences and information was collected I was given an estimate as to when my website would be ready and emailed again when it was. Just like that chloewright.moonfruit.com was born. At this point I was able to state any changes or modifications if I required them. However the site was just how I wanted it, Moonfruit’s job was complete and the site was signed over to me.

KickStart_Chloe_Wright__2_.png

My website offers a helping hand to writers stuck in a writing rut, as well as acting as somewhere for me to display my own fiction. In order for this to work the site needed to be friendly yet professional and that’s what Moonfruit have done, I got the striking website I wanted. http://chloewright.moonfruit.com/ isn’t a medieval labyrinth either; the tabs are there for visitors upon arrival – it is so beautifully simple.

Making a website in this way, for me, was fantastic. Sending my information was easy; I will admit that in the beginning I was a little hesitant to send links to my social media, particularly my blog because whilst it is there for the entirety of the internet to feast its eyes upon, it is quite a personal space for me. But I bit the hypothetical bullet and sent everything that I thought would benefit the process and I’m glad that I did. As long as you know how to attach a document and you know what you want to do, I would say you are good to go.

Communication with the Moonfruit team was great. They were quick to reply to any questions or queries I had; they really wanted to get it right and were keen for me to be honest if I was not pleased with - quite frankly - anything. They understood exactly what I wanted and this is demonstrated through my site. I would definitely recommend their service to anyone else wanting a professional website; I could not be more pleased with mine."

Moonfruit on TV - Kennedy City Bicycles

0
0
The next featured customer who shone in our TV ad star is James Kennedy - an entrepreneur who successfully turned his hobby into a business. He chatted to us about what made him become his own boss and trying to keep a straight face on camera...

James Kennedy Bicycles.jpg

James loves to make city bikes.

No, not £5,000 beasts more suited to conquer Mordor’s Mount Doom, nor cheap ‘fixie’ knock-offs that make a disconcerting clickety-clack sound when the wheels rotate. As he puts it: "We make our bicycles to order with the purpose of putting more people in the city streets, riding and loving it the same way we do."

Kennedy_City_Bicycles_homepage500.jpg

Launched bang in the middle of 2013 – serendipitously when the UK got one of its best summers in years – Kennedy City Bicycles extends what James was already doing in his spare time.  “I began as a hobbyist, building bicycles for fun and passing them on to friends. After a disappointing search for a first bike for my fiancé, I realised there was a hole in the market for high quality and good value city bicycles," he said.

“A year later I worked out I could build bikes that would earn me enough money to pay the rent so I quit my job immediately and Kennedy City Bicycles was born.”

kennedy_city_bicycles_design_page500.jpg

Today, he prides his business on its ‘openness, honesty and being entirely without bull****’.  He adds: “Besides occasional forays into the world of pop-up shops, the site is where we do almost all of our business. It’s our window on the world, without it we’d be nothing.”

As for the Moonfruit ad: “It was hilarious being filmed. The crew was dead nice – there were 21 of them in our workshop, which made for quite a crowd! It was a great atmosphere though and it took a lot of energy to keep a straight face when it came to the actual filming.

james_kennedy_bts.jpg

“Plus Huxley (our great dane) insisted on playing with each and every one of them individually until eventually sitting on one of their laps and pinning her to the sofa.”

New to v6: The Blog (Beta) and contact form update

0
0

Yep. Hot on the heels of the contact form beta comes the other most requested feature for v6...

Moonfruit_Blog_on_iPad.jpg

The Blog

Similar to the v5 incarnation but reworked for the age of HTML5, this faster, more SEO-friendly blog makes its beta debut.

For those of you who don’t know what beta means, this is the basic, no-frills version of the final product. Like Tony Stark when he makes his first Iron Man suit. Pretty good, but there’s still a bit of work to be done.

So, if you've been waiting to start a blog on your site, now's the time! Just bear in mind that features such as comments won't be available until the next release in a few weeks.

In the meantime, you can now…

  • Add a blog to your v6 site and view it on all devices
  • Compose blog posts, including images, links and the option to use excerpts
  • Benefit from greater search engine visibility for your blog pages

Moonfruit_Blog_Tool.jpg

  • For customers who have migrated their sites to v6 (or have been waiting for today's release), you’ll see all of your blog articles from v5 automatically imported into this new version

Moonfruit_Blog_Migrate_Tool.jpg

And, when the comments feature arrives in the next release, any comments left on your v5 blog (saved in our database) will also be pulled through automatically.

Moonfruit on TV: Freed of London

With a history dating back to 1929, Freed of London is one of the most recognised ballet shoe manufacturers in the UK. We dropped in on the dance-shoe makers for our new TV ad and found a warehouse combining its traditional business model with new media.

Two things are obvious when you step inside Freed of London– the piercing bangs of heavy machinery at work and the number of men.

The warehouse seems a world away from dance: there's pop music on the radio, banter between burly cobblers, this is a traditional British manufacturer.

Yet, with Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet and English National Ballet among its regular clients, Freed is one of the main go-to warehouses for pointe shoes. Following the founder Frederick Freed, its cobblers take great pride in their work and the business learnt a long time ago that the classic methods can still be the best.

Stacey Kelly, brand development manager at Freed, said: “People are often surprised to learn that our pointe shoes are still handmade by a team of over 30 different makers, all of whom make their pointe shoes slightly differently. “Once a dancer has found a pointe shoe they are particularly comfortable with, they will often stay with the same maker for the duration of their dancing career.”

But even a business that proves the old ways can be the best understands what’s needed to go global.

Stacey continues: “A website is often the first port of call for our customers, many of whom have specific needs. This information is often difficult to provide in an interesting manner but with
our new [Moonfruit] website we will be able to raise our customers’ awareness of what we can do to help them.”

In-Box_Talks_at_Boxpark.jpg

As you know, we've taken a space at retail pop-up Boxpark in east London to show people what we do.

While we're there, we'll be hosting a few in-box talks (and we'll hopefully have a bit more to say than the little guy above).

We'll be covering topics you told us you wanted to hear about - via a little online poll we conducted on Facebook.

You spoke, we listened, and now the dates are in:

  • 12th March: Google Analytics
  • 26th March: SEO
  • 9th April: Copywriting
  • 23rd April: Design 101

Email us at boxpark@moonfruit.com to save a place. Do specify which talk you wish to attend in the subject line, and the number of places you'd like to reserve. Places are limited so register early.

If you can't make the events, feel free to pop by and take a look around. You'll be able to check out the handiwork of fellow customers, including Reloved Vintage, Etrala, Garrard Prints and Jordanne Cliffe.

We've other Boxpark tricks up our sleeves, so stay tuned for updates.

Hope to see you there!
